Dr. Mellgren feels privileged to perform cataract surgery at this time in its history. 30 years ago it was done through a larger wound and removed all at once, hence the style was to wait till it was “RIPE” before having surgery because it was more successful that way.
Today the cataract in removed by a delicate process that takes under 10 minutes and can be done at any stage of development. Topical drops numb the eye so no patch is required afterward. A small entry into the eye is used to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a new one.(standard or deluxe). The entry is so small it closes up on its own without suturing. Some patients see well enough to drive the following day after surgery.
Dr. Mellgren has been performing Cataract surgery since 1987. Since 1993 she has been using the small, suture-less technique and performs the procedure under topical anesthesia with sedation. This means that no patch is required immediately after the procedure and that one can look through the eye right away, an important consideration for those with only one good eye. The surgery is performed at a nearby surgery center and is outpatient, which means you come and go the same day.
We offer all the intraocular lens (IOL) choices available today which include Crystalens/CrystalensHD, Rezoom and Restor and Toric Intraocular Lens.
